Roofing FAQs

If you’ve not hired a roofing contractor before, any sort of roofing project can seem a little daunting. Knowing what to expect can help to ease some of the worries that you may have and keep you feeling in control.

Here are some of the most common questions that we are asked about roofing:

How do I know if my roof needs to be replaced?

There are several key indicators that a roof replacement is needed. These include:

  • Bucking and curling shingles. These can occur when moisture in the attic space causes the nails to push out of place, loosening the shingle and putting you at risk of leaks and other damage.
  • Algae growth. Bacteria from algae can actually eat through the shingle, particularly if you have opted for those made from limestone.
  • Missing shingles. They can become loose and fall off in high winds or other inclement weather, letting rainwater get into your property.
  • Missing granules. If you have asphalt roof shingles, these will be made up of small granules. If any granules come loose, it can affect the performance of the shingle. If you have loose granules, you will likely find these, or fragments of them, in your guttering.
  • Mold in your attic. This will probably form on the plywood on the underside of your roof, or on the rafter beams, and indicate that there is damp in your attic space.
  • If you notice any of these signs, you should get in touch with a roofing contractor as soon as possible.

What are the different types of roof covering?

There are more roof coverings available than ever before, and all of them have properties that are best for different styles of home. Some of the most common include:

  • Interlocking tiles
  • Clay tiles
  • Stone tiles
  • Concrete tiles
  • Slate tiles
  • Metal roofing
  • Thatched roofing
  • Shingled roofing

Your roofing contractor will be able to advise you which material roof covering will be best for your property.

Can I replace my roof during the winter?

The most popular time of year for people to replace their roof is in spring, closely followed by late fall. However, there is no reason why you can’t undergo a roof replacement in winter if you need one. An experienced and professional roof installation team know just how to install a new roof without risking exposing other areas of the house to damage from cold temperatures.

Will a new roof lower my energy bills?

Many people are surprised to discover just how much money they could save by getting a new roof on their property. Not only can a new roof prevent excess drafts and water leaks, but it can also improve ventilation that could prevent your HVAC system from having to work too hard in the summer months.

Will I need to move out of my home while my roof is being repaired/replaced?

Only in very exceptional circumstances, such as when a roof is considered structurally unsafe, will you need to move out of your home while your roof is being repaired.

How long is a roof designed to last?

Most new roofs are designed to be effective for around 20 years, but some roof types such as clay, slate and certain metals can last even longer. However, other factors can also play a part in how long a roof will last, including the usual climate where you are, the quality of the workmanship and how well it has been maintained.
